Alagappa University, accredited with ‘A+” Grade by NAAC (CGPA: 3.64) in the Third cycle of Assessment and Graded Category I University by MHRD-UGC is located at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu. The University has secured 27th Position among Universities in India in the NIRF 2018 by MHRD. This University has emerged from the galaxy of institutions initially founded by the great philanthropist and educationist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. It has been recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The University has 16 Schools, comprising 40 Departments, 3 Institutes, 9 Centres, 3 Constituent Colleges and 3 Directorates. It has 40 affiliated Colleges in Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram Districts in its fold. Right now, 1.20 lakh students are pursuing their studies under various streams of the University. As a member of the Association of Indian University (AIU), as well as the member of the Association of Common Wealth Universities (ACU), it has established relations with other academic institutions, research laboratories and industrial establishments that promise a spectacular future. The University is having International Collaborations with Universities / Institutions of Higher Learning in countries like China, Malaysia, West Indies, U.S.A. and South Korea. Innovative programmes have been designed and offered at the University for the foreign students. 40 international exchange programmes attract the attention of the teachers and students from abroad. The Department of Library & Information Science is functioning in the University since 2006 with the aim of providing up-to-date LIS education to the students through effective teaching programmes and practical training. The department is working with the vision to educate individuals for careers as librarians, document a lists, information professionals, archivists, information scientists and knowledge managers. The students are educated and trained in order to undertake instruction, research and service oriented programmes which require knowledge on current emerging information technological developments and market requirements. Presently the department is offering M.Lib.I.Sc. (2 Years), M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Library & Information Science through regular stream and it is also offering C.L.I.Sc, B.Lib.I.Sc, M.Lib.I.Sc. and PGDLAN through distance education mode.
